Shots fired at Winnipeg home again

WINNIPEG – Police arrested two people after a West Kildonan home was shot at for a second day in a row Tuesday.

Police were again called about shots fired at 509 Seven Oaks Avenue just after 4 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The home was fired on Monday morning at around the same time. “We do believe this home was targetted. For what reason? We’re not sure,” said Det. Sgt. Natalie Aitken.

Police have two people in custody, they said.

An SUV was seen leaving the area on Tuesday, police said. About 15 minutes later, police approached a Ford Explorer near Portage Avenue and Vaughan Street, which raced off.

Police pursued the Explorer south until it crashed into a snowbank near Bairdmore Boulevard and Beaufort Crescent, where two men got out and ran away, police said.

The canine unit and other police pursued the men on foot and captured two suspects.

The men were taken to the Public Safety Building and members of Winnipeg’s major crimes unit continue to investigate. No charges have been laid yet, police said.

A University of Manitoba criminologist said the incident could stem from the decimation of the Manitoba Warriors street gang earlier this year in a police operation dubbed Project: Falling Star.

“It wouldn’t be unusual for smaller groups to try to be moving in on that territory,” said Frank Cormier. “And the smaller groups, when they’re trying to establish themselves, will often do more overt violent acts, such as shooting at the same house twice within 24 hours.”
