Global News projects Samir Kayande has won the seat in Calgary-Elbow for the Alberta New Democrat Party.
Calgary-Elbow is a provincial riding located in Calgary. This riding is currently vacant but was represented by former United Conservative Party MLA Doug Schweitzer, who first took office in 2019.
Schweitzer 10,951 collected votes, winning 44.3 per cent of the vote in the 2019 Alberta provincial election. Alberta Party candidate and incumbent Greg Clark was runner-up with 30.5 per cent of the vote, and Alberta NDP candidate Janet Eremenko followed with 23.5 per cent.
After handling the justice ministerial portfolio and jobs, economy and innovation portfolio, Schweitzer announced his resignation as MLA on Aug. 5, 2022. That riding has been without an MLA since then.
Two days after she took the position as leader of the UCP, Danielle Smith said she would not call a byelection to replace Schweitzer. Byelections are typically called within six months of when the seat is left vacant except in the last year of a government’s term — a reason the UCP leader cited and one that political scientists questioned for the definition of the final year of a term. That day, Smith announced she would run in a byelection in Brooks-Medicine Hat after Michaela Frey stepped down.
Voters will decide who will represent Calgary-Elbow during the upcoming Alberta provincial election on May 29, 2023. Visit this page on election night for a complete breakdown of up-to-the-minute results.
