Two people have died following a major crash on Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge, B.C.
One other person was air-lifted to hospital with “non-life-threatening injuries,” according to police.
Pictures from the scene Sunday morning show serious damage to two vehicles, with one car torn in half.
“The crash scene was extensive with significant damage from the vehicles on the road and into the brush,” Dawn Roberts said, a BC RCMP spokesperson.
“One vehicle described as having essentially split into two. Crews had to go into the brush to locate the individuals involved amid that widespread wreckage and retrieve or extract people.”
Police said the crash took place around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Lougheed Highway was closed in both directions from 272 Street to 280 Street for several hours overnight.
The cause of the crash is being investigated.
The highway reopened around 9 a.m. Sunday morning.
