Waterloo Regional Police say one person is in custody after a bomb threat was made at the Region of Waterloo International Airport on Monday afternoon.
Emergency crews were called to the airport just before 2 p.m. for reports that someone onboard a plane said he had a bomb.
“A passenger on board was able to alert airport staff that another passenger made a threat that he had a bomb on the plane,” police spokesperson Cherri Greeno said. “The plane was awaiting takeoff at the time.”
Greeno added that all passengers are off the plane and are safe and that one man was in custody.
Officers with the explosives disposal unit were working to determine if there is an explosive on the plane, she said.
The airport was closed with the investigation underway and people were asked to avoid the area.
A spokesperson for the region said there were delays to arrival and departure times. Passengers should check their flight status with their airline.
