Body of Edmonton man found in Wabamum Lake

Crews recovered the body of a missing swimmer at Wabamun Lake, west of Edmonton, Wednesday.

The 20-year-old Edmonton man was swimming near a boat Friday around 9 p.m. near Kapasiwin when he ended up in distress and didn’t surface.

The fire department arrived to help with a boat, but there was no sign of the man.

RCMP and the Central Alberta Recovery Dive Society have been combing the water with sonar technology and a robotic underwater vehicle earlier this week.

Parkland RCMP received a phone call Wednesday morning that boaters on the lake had found a dead man in the water.

It’s believed he’s the missing Edmonton man, police said in an update.

RCMP recently said hot weather has resulted in Albertans flocking to lakes and rivers to enjoy recreational water activities such as tubing, paddle boarding and swimming — which has unfortunately resulted in injuries and fatalities.
