Global News is projecting that Conservative incumbent Frank Caputo has been elected in the riding of Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo.
The riding has been held by Conservatives since 2000, with Cathy McLeod representing the seat since 2008 until her recent retirement from politics.
Caputo, a lifelong resident of Kamloops had a strong lead, with 42.1 per cent of the ballot with 275 of 297 polls reporting as of 11 p.m.
Bill Sundhu of the NDP was second at 29.6 per cent, with Jesse McCormick of the Liberals in third at 17.9 per cent.
McLeod won the riding in 2019, earning 44.7 per cent of the vote. Liberal candidate Terry Lake, a former provincial health minister, placed second with 19,716 ballots.
A Liberal hasn’t served Kamloops since 1979, but the party did make significant gains six years ago, and Lake had hoped to build off that momentum.
The riding of covers the City of Kamloops and part of the surrounding areas in south-central B.C.
