Canada election results: Markham—Unionville

Global News is projecting Liberal MP Paul Chiang has been elected for in the riding of Markham—Unionville.

Markham—Unionville is in York Region and is comprised partly of the Town of Markham.

The riding is home to 123,318 residents and 88,882 registered voters. Immigrants make up almost 61 per cent of this riding’s population, with Cantonese and Mandarin being the most popular non-official languages, superseding French and English, according to the 2016 census.

Incumbent MP Bob Saroya, a Conservative, won the riding in 2019 for a second time, beating Liberal Alan Ho by 5,649 votes, a margin of 10.6 per cent. The NDP and Green Party candidates came in third and fourth place in this region.

Markham—Unionville was previously held John McCallum a Liberal MP, who later served as Canada’s ambassador to China.
