Canada election results: Brampton Centre

Global News is projecting Liberal MP Shafqat Ali has been elected in the riding of Brampton Centre.

The Brampton Centre riding is one of five in the city. It was recreated for the previous federal election, taking portions of now-defunct ridings: Brampton—Springdale, Bramalea—Gore—Malton and Mississauga—Brampton South. It covers the centre portion of Brampton.

This riding is home to Donald M. Gordon Chinguacousy Park. Parts of the 2014 Brie Larson film Room were filmed in this riding’s local mall, the Bramalea City Centre.

Immigrants make up almost half of this riding’s population. Jamaica, India, and the Philippines are a few of the most popular countries of origin in the region.

Ramesh Sangha was re-elected by voters in the riding of Brampton Centre in 2019.

Sangha represented the Liberal Party and defeated Tory candidate Pawanjit Gosal by 8,075 votes.

The Liberal MP was first elected in 2015 when he scored a comfortable victory in 2015 over former cabinet minister Bal Gosal.

Sangha was expelled from the Liberal caucus in January after allegedly making “baseless and dangerous accusations against a number of his caucus colleagues,” according to Party Whip Mark Holland.

Sangha has not publicly announced whether he will seek re-election this fall.
