Bloc Québécois candidate Alain Therrien is the projected winner in the riding of La Prairie.
The riding encompasses the cities of Candiac, Delson, La Prairie, Sainte-Catherine and Saint-Constant.
The municipalities of Saint-Mathieu and Saint-Philippe, including Kahnawake Indian Reserve No. 14, are also part of this riding. Kahnawake means “place of rapids,” a reference to the Lachine rapids, which sit at the base of the region.
Close to 9.5 per cent of the population in this riding consists of immigrants from populations born in France and China.
Voters elected Alain Therrien of the Bloc Québécois to represent them during the 2019 federal election. Therrien is a former member of the National Assembly of Quebec for the district of Sanguinet.
The BQ candidate ended the night with 41.8 per cent of the vote, defeating incumbent Liberal MP Jean-Claude Poissant by 5.2 percentage points. Poissant previously served as the parliamentary secretary to the minister of agriculture and agri-food.
La Prarie is one of five seats lost by the Liberals in Quebec during the 2019 election.
