Richard Martel for the Conservatives is the projected winner for the riding of ChicoutimI-Le Fjord.
The riding of Chicoutimi—Le Fjord is located in the city of Saguenay, encompassing Chicoutimi and La Braie.
In the 2012 electoral redistribution, the riding lost some territory to Jonquière, including the area north of the Saguenay River. This district was previously known as Chicoutimi.
This is a primarily French-speaking riding. Residents whose mother tongue is French make up almost 98 per cent of the population, according to numbers from the 2016 census.
Voters in Chicoutim – Lfjord re-elected Conservative MP Richard Martel to represent them in the 2019 federal election. Martel beat BQ Candidate Valerie Tremblay by 834 votes. Dajana Dautovic came in third with 17.4 per cent of the vote.
Martel was first elected in a by-election held in June 2018. He obtained 52.76 per cent of the vote.
Before entering politics, Martel was the coach of the Chicoutimi Saguenéens, a hockey team in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Tremblay worked as a secondary school teacher.
