Emergency crews were called to the area of Westwood and Willow roads at around 3 a.m.

“On arrival, smoke was found coming from the front of the townhouse. The firefighters made entry and quickly extinguished the fire,” Fire Chief Dave Elloway said.

The woman was pulled out of the basement by firefighters and taken to Guelph General Hospital where she later died. A man suffered a minor injury not related to the fire, police said.
