In a tweet just after 10 a.m. Tuesday police said the roadway had been closed to traffic between Dublin and Logan avenues due to the leak.

The city says the leak was reported in the 1800 block of King Edward Street around 9:50 a.m. Gas readings at the scene were found to be at high levels, the city said.

A spokesperson from Manitoba Hydro said crews found the leak in a parking lot, and a nearby office complex had to be evacuated while crews worked to reach the underground pipes.

He said the repairs were expected to take much of the day.

In an email to media the city said the gas was safely venting into the atmosphere and roads were beginning to reopen by shortly after 3 p.m. The city said southbound King Edward Street remained closed at Logan Avenue.

In a tweet police said the southbound stretch of Route 90 would remain blocked to traffic “for some time.”

The gas leak was the second crews were dealing with in Winnipeg Tuesday.

The city says fire crews were called to another gas leak at a single-family home in the 600 block of Rathgar Avenue around just before 11 a.m.

In that case official say construction crews had been digging in the area when they hit a gas line.

Three neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution.

No injuries were reported at either gas leak.
