Man with suspected ties to organized crime arrested following high-speed crash in Surrey

A man who police suspect of having ties to organized crime was arrested in Cloverdale Friday morning after a high-speed collision at 180 Street and Golden Ears Way in Surrey.

Heavily-armed Surrey RCMP officers could be seen searching for the man.

Just after 8 a.m., officers were called to a collision involving an SUV and a sedan and saw the driver of the SUV flee the scene on foot, police said.

The passenger, who had minor injuries, stayed at the scene, along with the driver of the sedan.

Police said officers saw a handgun inside the SUV and then arrested the passenger for possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The search, which involved a police dog, continued for the driver. He was spotted around 10 a.m. and arrested for failing to remain at the scene of a collision, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Both the driver and the passenger are known to police, Surrey RCMP confirmed.
