Calgary police said on Monday a man arrested in relation to a “domestic-related” shooting in Penbrooke Meadows on the weekend has been released without charges “at this time.”
The Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit was called to a shooting inside a home in the 500 block of Penworth Way S.E. around 12:30 p.m., which left a person in critical, life-threatening condition. Shortly after, a man was declared dead, police said.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, which police said will formally identify the victim, who is believed to be in his 20s.
A man in his 40s was taken into custody at the scene, officers said.
Investigators said the targeted shooting was “believed to be a domestic-related incident” and that out of “respect for the privacy of the family,” no more details would be released until after the autopsy is done and it’s determined whether charges can be laid.
Witness accounts
A white SUV was sitting in the front yard of the property, and was still running as of 3 p.m.
“I heard a bang and then I walked over to the window and looked out, and that’s when I saw the car on the lawn and police running everywhere,” said nearby resident Tamara Beauregard.
“My first thought was, ‘Is everybody OK over there?'”
“When I went to the store, that white car that’s on the lawn, it was sitting on the street,” said Vince Lalonde, who has lived in the neighbourhood since 1977.
Lalonde said no incidents have happened at that home before, adding that they are a nice family.
Police said the people involved knew each other, adding that it was not random.
EMS said no one was assessed inside or outside the home, taken to hospital or injured in the incident.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call police at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
