Tame Impala drops new single, ‘It Might Be Time’

Rock band Tame Impala's new album, 'The Slow Rush,' is due in 2020 – Oct 25, 2019

A brand new Tame Impala single premiered on Monday afternoon during an interview with Zane Lowe of Beats 1. It’s called It Might Be Time, and comes from the band’s newly announced fourth studio album, The Slow Rush (2020).

Founder and sole member of the Australian rock project, Kevin Parker, also spoke about the song during the in-depth interview, revealing he took some inspiration for the synth-heavy track from British prog-rock icons Supertramp.

“The way the song ended up sounding is the last thing I thought it would sound like,” said the 33-year-old. “It was a see-where-it-goes kind of thing, as opposed to some other songs where I can literally hear it in my head before I start recording.

“I love those Supertramp-like melodies, ’70s prog-type emotional things. But I also love extremely distorted, bombastic, blown-out drums. I feel like I haven’t done a song in a while where the drums are the main feature.”

On the four-minute, 30-second single, Parker concluded: “It’s my love: drum sounds… across all music, whether it’s rock ‘n’ roll or hip hop.”

Tame Impala announced The Slow Rush on Friday in a video shared to the band’s official YouTube account. The teaser showed clips of Parker setting up equipment in a vintage recording studio before revealing the album title and vague release date.

The teaser is interlaced with shots of outdoor scenery and clips from the group’s last tour.

A snippet of a new song can also be heard in the last half before the sound cuts out and the video ends.

Initially, only a small portion of the teaser was available on Tame Impala’s website. Though it offered no details about a new album, it featured Parker in the studio, leading followers to believe that new music was in the works.

Tame Impala’s last album, Currents, was released on July 17, 2015 — making this the longest period supporters of the project have had to wait for a new album.

Diehard fans of the band, however, were treated to two singles within the span of a month earlier this year, Patience and Borderline — which were both performed on Saturday Night Live back in March.
