Burlington charity sending gifts to those in need

TORONTO – A Burlington charity is sending practical items to children and adults in need.

Sew on Fire Ministries is a charity that has been creating custom designed cloth gift bags and filling them with practical items to be sent to children and adults in need for the 13 years.

Their 6,000 square foot distribution centre in Burlington is overflowing with school supplies, clothing and personal care items all ready to be packed into hand-sewn bags.

Wendy Hagar, the founder of Sew on Fire, she said the name comes from an expression she used when she was starting the ministry.

“I was ‘so on fire’ to make a difference,” she said.

To date, more than 200,000 gift bags have been sent around the world including many cities in Canada.

“We have a lot of need here too. A lot with First Nations, low income families, single moms, homeless, whatever the need is…we want to be ready and willing and able,” said Hagar.

One of the many organizations Sew on Fire has partnered with is the King’s Way in Hamilton – an outreach centre that brings positive change to those less fortunate.

“Sew on Fire means everything to us because we get to actually see lives change, and the thankfulness that they have in their heart that someone actually cares,” Shelley Clement, Director of The King’s Way Outreach Centre, Hamilton said.

The organization is run completely by volunteers who sew, knit, pack, and donate items included in each bag.

“It’s more than just things that I’m giving, it is giving hope,” one volunteer Sharon Packham said.
