Man arrested after allegedly trying to carjack 2 vehicles in Saanich

Police in Saanich have arrested a 29-year-old man after he allegedly tried to carjack two vehicles on Sunday night.

According to Saanich police, the suspect began at the Esso on Douglas Street and Tolmie Avenue around 8:30 p.m., where he approached several vehicles at the pumps.

As one of the gas-station customers finished pumping fuel and returned to his black sedan, the suspect approached him and tried to force his way into the car, police said.

A struggle ensued, at which point witnesses came to the driver’s aid and the suspect fled on a bicycle, according to police.

Shortly afterward, in the adjacent Tim Horton’s parking lot, police allege the man approached a Honda Civic, this time with a father and daughter inside.

Police said the man opened the driver’s side door and began assaulting the father. The driver lost control of the vehicle which backed into a parked tow truck, then shot forward when it got bumped into “drive.”

Police said the Civic struck three other cars, drove over a garden bed and tree and then stopped when it hit a retaining wall.

Another group of witnesses came to the driver’s aid and restrained the suspect. The father and daughter were taken to hospital with what police believe are minor injuries.

Investigators say the suspect was arrested for robbery, and is being held in custody. He was due in court on Monday.

Police are still looking to speak with witnesses, particularly the driver of the black sedan who was the first alleged target of the suspect.
