An off-duty Delta police officer has been stabbed while trying to break up an assault outside a private elementary school on Wednesday afternoon.
Police descended on Immaculate Conception Elementary School on 119 Street shortly after the incident occurred in front of the school around 3 p.m. Police confirmed the incident was not connected to any of the students at the school.

“An off-duty Delta police officer was at Immaculate Conception and witnessed an assault occurring between a man and a woman in front of the school,” Delta Police spokesperson Cris Leykauf said in a statement. “He intervened, and during the altercation the woman and the officer were stabbed.”

Leykauf later confirmed to Global News that both the officer and the woman are in serious condition.

The school’s principal said the school will be closed on Thursday and plans to re-open on Friday.
The school was put on lockdown immediately after the incident occurred. Parents were being asked to go to 88 Avenue and 120 Street at the Desi Junction parking lot to pick up their children.
A suspect is in custody, and Leykauf said the suspect and the female victim were known to each other. She could not confirm if the two had any connection to the school.
Ron Calliou, who saw the suspect being led away in handcuffs, said the suspect was covered with blood, but could not tell what had happened to the victims he saw on the ground.
Police say they are continuing to investigate.
