History

Former Premier Jim Prentice, who died in a plane crash in 2016, reclaimed his seat in the Calgary-Foothills riding in the 2015 election, but promptly resigned as leader of the Progressive Conservatives when the NDP won the election.

That triggered a byelection, which eventually saw Wildrose candidate Prasad Panda win the seat.

The Calgary-Foothills riding was established in 1971. Voters in the riding had historically elected PC MLAs since its creation.

Prentice first won his seat in the riding in a byelection after he replaced former premier Alison Redford as PC leader.
