Retired Abbotsford police sergeant killed in Nanaimo crash

The victim of a fatal head-on collision in Nanaimo on Saturday has been identified as a well-known retired Abbotsford police sergeant.

Abbotsford Police have confirmed that the victim was Sgt. Shinder Kirk, a long-time police fixture in the Lower Mainland gang war.

Kirk served as media spokesperson for the Abbotsford Police Department, Integrated Gang Task Force and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU).

“Despite Shinder leaving CFSEU-BC in 2012, his time with the unit left a lasting mark,” said Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton with the CFSEU.

“His professionalism, dedication, and passion for making our communities safe from gang violence was exceptional. The thoughts of all of us at the CFSEU-BC go out to Shinder’s family and those who knew Shinder at this tragic time. We will miss him.”

Nanaimo RCMP said the collision happened just before 2 p.m. on Cedar Road near the Cedar Bridge.

Police said two pickup trucks collided head on. In one vehicle, the Kirk was killed and two passengers were injured.

No one in the second vehicle was transported to hospital, police said.

The crash remains under investigation.
