Toronto police say rescue crews have recovered the body of a scuba diver who went missing at the Humber Bay Park marina over the weekend.
Police said they responded to call at 7:57 p.m. Sunday for a man in his 40s who was in the water and did not resurface.
Authorities said two divers were in the water at the marina and one made it out safely, but the other did not.
The police marine unit and Toronto Fire Services conducted a search for the missing diver but it was called off late Sunday evening due to darkness.
The search resumed Monday morning and authorities located the body around 9:20 a.m.
Jim Jessiman, a scuba instructor who did not know the divers, said most diving accidents are medical-related.
“Most diving accidents are more medical then are equipment or natural decompression,” Jessiman said.
“No one is going to be happy about it, but everyone dives safely that I am in contact with. So it’s a very rare occasion.”
There were reports the deceased diver had some sort of regulator failure. But Jessiman said a death from a possible regulator problem is something divers are trained for.
“What’s called a free flow and as you rise up you would still be able to breathe from. You know it’s free flowing at a high pressure,” Jessiman said.
“They’ve been trained to do that and being fairly shallow out there, I would suspect they would have plenty of time to get to the surface.”
Police have not released the age or identity of the victim.
