Smoking and mattresses don’t mix

The quick actions of a neighbour prevented a small fire from spreading at a Richter Streeet area home in Kelowna Monday.

Flames were crawling up a garage wall when Kelowna firefighters were called to the residence in the 2100 block of Woodlawn Street – off Richter.

Neighbour, Landon Laberge, was first to spot the flames.

“I came into my backyard and saw fire over the fence. So I grabbed my garden hose and tried to control it the best I could.”

The residents, a couple and their small child, were not harmed.

Kelowna fire officials say it would appear that a discarded cigarette may be the source.

They say the cigarette may have landed on top of two old mattresses propped up against the wall and eventually ignited the fire.

The cause has been ruled as accidental.
