Winnipeg Jets forward Mark Scheifele is coming off the bench to sub in for his Jets linemate.

The executive director of the Players Cup, Adam Boge, announced on Monday Scheifele will replace Jets captain Blake Wheeler in the field at this year’s Players Cup.

“It’s an honour to be part of the Players Cup,” Scheifele said in a media release. “I grew up playing golf, starting on a small course in Tavistock, Ontario, and to have this chance to play in a PGA TOUR sanctioned event is very exciting.”

Almost two weeks ago it was announced Wheeler would play in the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada event on a sponsor’s exemption, but he is now unable to attend due to personal commitments.

“We are extremely pleased to have Mark Scheifele accept a sponsor exemption to the Players Cup,” Boge said in a statement. “By committing to be part of Manitoba’s premiere professional golf tournament, it shows us all what a great supporter he continues to be to Manitobans.”
