It really shouldn’t come as a surprise but the Winnipeg Jets and Jacob Trouba have officially signed the contract that was awarded by an arbitrator on the weekend.

The Jets announced Wednesday that both sides have now signed the one-year, $5.5 million contract that was handed down through arbitration on Sunday. Trouba had his arbitration hearing last Friday in Toronto.

The Jets had the option of walking away from the arbitrator’s decision which would have made Trouba an unrestricted free agent.

Trouba, 24, is now under contract with the Jets for the 2018-2019 season and he will once again be a restricted free agent next July. Trouba has played the last five seasons for the Jets. He scored three goals with 21 assists in 55 games last season.

Trouba was the Jets’ first round draft pick when they selected him ninth overall in the 2012 NHL Draft.

The Jets have roughly $10 million left in salary cap space with five restricted free agents remaining. Josh Morrissey, Nic Petan, Eric Comrie, JC Lipon and Nicolas Kerdiles all still need new contracts but the club must also leave room under the cap for performance bonuses.
