The Lions Gate Bridge is now open to traffic in both directions Friday afternoon after being closed for four-and-a-half hours.
A police incident on the bridge closed the deck in both directions at 7:30 a.m.
Drivers already in the Stanley Park Causeway were told to stop and turn around.
Bike and pedestrian traffic was also blocked by police.
Drivers were being asked to take the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge and traffic there was very heavy Friday, especially following a stall on the bridge deck.
TransLink was also warning of significant delays on the SeaBus due to higher than usual numbers of commuters looking to avoid the bridge.
Sgt. Jason Robillard with the Vancouver Police Department told Global News they negotiated with the distraught man for hours and the situation was resolved peacefully.
The man was transported to hospital but Robillard would not say if anyone was injured.
The Independent Investigations Office is not investigating the incident.
Director of operations with the BC Ambulance Service Samantha Wilbur said the gridlock should not impact paramedics ability to do their jobs, because the service has vehicles on both sides of Burrard Inlet.
“We have ambulances that come from the north end of the Ironworkers Bridge as well as the south, and we make sure that we have units stationary where we know there is excess congestion or other areas that we know may cause a delay in the response time.”
However, she’s reminding drivers that if they are stuck in stopped traffic and a paramedic is coming behind, they should still move as close to the curb as possible.
