With Canada Day celebrations this weekend, people young and old across the true north have been showing patriotism in many different ways.
This includes a retirement home in downtown Saskatoon.
Every year, the Palisades Retirement Residence hangs a Canada flag on each of its balconies ahead of Canada’s birthday.
“It started out slow, one flag at a time,” Palisades housing manager Jayce Ollenberger said.
The building on 23rd Street East has been hanging up flags for years for Canada Day, and the trend gained steam throughout the years, but for Canada 150 the residence really ramped up their display.
“One thing we should mention is if you have a block party, you can contact your MP and they’ll send you a flag,” Ollenberger said. “So we were able to amass quite a few that way.”

The Palisades has gained plenty of public attention for the patriotic display, with people stopping to take pictures or just a peek as they walk through the downtown. Typically, the residents put up their flags ahead of the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival.
The home’s residents are all over 65 years old, and has included many veterans over the years.
“We have a lot of pride, and we like to show it,” Ollenberger said.
