Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil is set to make a major health care announcement today in Cape Breton.

The NDP have condemned reports that the premier will announce that Northside General Hospital and New Waterford Consolidated Hospital will be closing.

Health critic Tammy Martin says the government’s decision to close two hospitals during a “health care crisis” is appalling.

The closures were reported by the CBC, which also reported that Glace Bay Hospital and Cape Breton Regional Hospital will be expanding.

The public broadcaster reported that the province is also expected to announce the opening of health care community centres to replace the two closing hospitals, however those would not be equipped with emergency rooms.
