A male motorcyclist in his 50s is dead after a hit-and-run in east-end Toronto early Thursday.
Emergency crews were called to the area of St. Clair Avenue East and Danforth Road just before 6:00 a.m.
Traffic Services const. Clint Stibbe told reporters that a motorcycle travelling westbound on St. Clair collided with a vehicle going eastbound and turning onto Danforth Road.
Toronto paramedics said the motorcyclist was pronounced dead on scene.
Stibbe said a blue four-door Hyundai Accent fled the scene eastbound on Danforth Road. He said the vehicle may have significant damage to its front right side — a portion of the vehicle could be hanging off.
Police are also looking to speak to the driver of a red 2005-2010 Pontiac Pursuit/G5, which was eastbound on St. Clair, turning left onto Danforth Road at the time of the incident.
The victim has not yet been identified as investigators work to notify next-of-kin.
“As you can imagine we now have a family that has been destroyed, and a driver that has failed to remain at the scene who is responsible for the death of this individual,” Stibbe said.
“At this point we have somebody who has died as a result of really, a preventable collision,” he said. “… As a result of a mistake that somebody has made, somebody has died.”
Thursday’s incident marks the third road fatality of the week.
On Monday, 50-year-old Isabel Soria was fatally struck only metres from her Dufferin Street home. She was walking to the Service Ontario located inside a plaza across the street.
Around noon Tuesday, a 58-year-old woman was cycling in the area of St. George Street and Bloor Street West. She was hit by a large flatbed truck and was pronounced dead on scene.
Mayor John Tory, at an unrelated media event on Wednesday told reporters the city is working hard to achieve the vision of zero traffic fatalities.
