UPDATE: Belleville police confirm one man dead after incident with Via Rail train

An unidentified incident on a CN rail track has stopped a Via Rail train near Belleville for several hours. Global News

Inspector Sheri Meeks with the Belleville Police confirmed that a man in his 30’s died on Thursday after an incident with a Via Rail train.

Meeks said the incident happened near the North Front Street overpass in Belleville. The overpass runs over the CN tracks.

The police would not give out any information about the cause of death.

According to Mylène Bélanger, media relations for Via Rail, the incident stopped train 51 travelling between Ottawa and Toronto. Several other trains in the area were stopped because of a police investigation.

Bélanger said the incident occurred around noon on May 17, west of the Belleville station.

Trains were stopped for over three hours on Thursday.

According to the Via Rail Twitter account, tracks were reopened around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
