After a series of brutal deep freeze winter temperatures, the National Capital Region might be getting an early – and very wet – preview of spring.
Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for much of the region, which includes Ottawa and Gatineau, on early Monday morning.

The statement forecasts the region will see between 10 to 20 millimeters of rain fall overnight and into Tuesday morning.
While that range falls below the criterion set out by the weather agency for issuing rainfall warnings when the ground is still frozen, the unseasonably warm temperatures also mean there could be another factor making for a very wet walk to work for those returning from Family Day weekend.

“This rainfall along with rapidly melting snow due to very mild temperatures may be enough to result in ponding of water in poorly drained areas,” Environment Canada said.
“Occasional rain along with very mild temperatures more typical of April is expected on Tuesday.”

According to the agency, the mix of warm weather and plenty of rain comes as a warm front and low pressure area begin to move through the region.
Already on Monday, residents out enjoying the statutory holiday got a balmy break with a high of around 5 C.
Temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday will hit roughly 11 C with the rest of the week hovering just above and below freezing.
