Spryfield community collecting donations for woman struck by car in crosswalk

Community members in Spryfield are rallying together to help the family of a woman who was struck by a vehicle while at a crosswalk last week.

The 48-year-old woman was crossing Herring Cove Road on the morning of Nov. 16 when she was hit.

She was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and community members say the mother of five remains there.

“I just know that when she does come home, it’s going to be a long road,” said Amber Fenton, the resident manager of the woman’s building.

The woman’s family has not released her name publicly.

Fenton has started collecting donations for the victim’s family, especially for her 16-year-old son and 14-year-old daughter, who both still live at home. An older sibling has returned from out of town to help in the meantime.

“We’re asking for grocery items to help them not have to worry about that bill,” Fenton said. “And we want to make sure the kids had a Christmas, knowing that their mother is going to be in the hospital more than likely during Christmas.”

Fenton says the outpouring of support from the community and beyond has been overwhelming.

So far, organizers have received gift cards, groceries and calls from the public interested in buying presents for the children.

“The family, they’re just so grateful that everybody is willing to help them in some way,” she said.

The 18-year-old man driving the vehicle was charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm and criminal negligence causing bodily harm.
