City transit collision leaves a pedestrian dead – Nov 3, 2017

A Kingston Transit bus turning left onto Leroy Grant Drive from John Counter Boulevard collided with a pedestrian in the intersection on Friday morning.

The man was sent to hospital by ambulance but by Friday afternoon, investigating Kingston Police officer Sgt. Darren Keuhl confirmed the worst.

“A male in his thirties was struck at approximately 7:15 a.m. this morning. Police were called. The victim has since passed away from his injuries.”

The bus driver, traumatized after the incident, was also taken to hospital by ambulance.

Police say the Number Two bus was on its way to St. Lawrence College when the pedestrian was hit.

John Counter Boulevard was reopened opened to traffic just after noon.

The on-sight portion of the investigation is now complete but Keuhl says a lot more information is still being gathered.

“Now we’re looking at the data of the traffic lights at the time. Again, we have to pinpoint it to the exact time and the location of the resting point of the victim was the crosswalk just on the south side of the intersection.”

The city of Kingston has released a statement saying it is cooperating with the police investigation and it also reads:

“Our first thoughts are with the pedestrian and their family. We also understand this is a difficult time for the employees involved. ”

Police are now reaching out to potential witnesses, whether they were passing by at the time of the collision or on the city bus.

Commuters were transferred from the bus before police were on scene and Keuhl says they want to speak with anyone that may have information.

“There may have been some people we didn’t catch. The officers at the scene did get a number of names so if somebody was at the scene or on the bus and had left prior to speaking with a police officer on the scene then those are the ones we really do want to speak with.”

Police are withholding the man’s name for now and have not confirmed if he is a Kingston resident.
