OWEN SOUND, Ont. – A 27-year-old man who set a series of fires that left 41 people homeless in an Ontario town has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Donald Wilson pleaded guilty in April to 20 arson related charges arising from fires set in August 2015 in downtown Owen Sound, Ont.
Court heard Wilson was drunk and on methamphetamine the night he set 10 fires – including several residential buildings and the gas tank of a car – but has no memory of it.
In addition to leaving people homeless the blazes caused an estimated $3 million in damage.
Justice Clayton Conlan ruled Thursday that Wilson’s sentence would include time already served, leaving him about with 8 3/4 years left in custody.
Conlan also ruled Wilson should serve that time in a facility with an alcohol addiction treatment program.
