Winnipeg Goldeyes fall to Wichita Wingnuts in game three of American Association championship

WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Goldeyes blew a three run lead to drop the third game of the American Association championship series 5-3 to the Wichita Wingnuts at Shaw Park on Sunday.

By beating the defending champions, Wichita moves a win back of its first league title since 2014.

Goldeyes centre fielder Reggie Abercrombie opened the scoring in the first inning with a RBI double. Shawn Pleffner’s ground out later moved Josh Romanski home to put Winnipeg up by a pair. The Goldeyes then made it 3-0 in the fourth off a Mason Katz single.

Wichita eventually got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning thanks to Richard Prigatano’s second home run of the playoffs. The Wingnuts inched within one in the sixth when T.J. Mittelstaedt doubled to score Christian Stringer. Wichita posted three more runs in the eighth, all of them two-out RBI singles, en route to the victory.

Goldeyes starter Kevin McGovern racked up a game-high seven strikeouts in the loss. Right-handed pitcher Josh Goosen-Brown picked up the win for the Wingnuts.

Game four is scheduled for Monday night at Shaw Park. If needed, a deciding game will be played in Winnipeg on Tuesday.
