WINNIPEG – A member of the Winnipeg Goldeyes has been named the player of the year for the first time in nearly 20 years. Goldeyes outfielder Josh Romanski was voted the American Association’s player of the year on Monday.

Romanski, 30, appeared in all but two games for the Goldeyes this season and his .327 batting average is third best in the league. He’s driven in 81 runs which is good for second place in the American Association. He’s also hit 11 home runs in his second season with the baseball club.

Romanski attended training camp with the Minnesota Twins in the spring but he was cut on the very last day of camp. He was originally drafted as a pitcher, with the Milwaukee Brewers selecting him in the fourth round in 2008. He pitched in both the New York Yankees’ and Chicago White Sox’ organizations from 2010 to 2013 before moving to the outfield.

Romanski is just the fourth Goldeyes’ player to win a most valuable player award and first since Sean Hearn back in 1998. Terry Lee also won player of the year twice in 1995 and 1996. The player of the year award is voted on by the league’s managers and media representatives.

The Goldeyes conclude the regular season later on Monday against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and the North Division champions will open the playoffs on the road against a yet to be determined opponent on Wednesday.
