Occupational Health and Safety is investigating after a Red Deer man was killed in a workplace accident along the QEII Highway north of Calgary on Tuesday.
Emergency crews were called to a construction zone in the northbound lanes of Highway 2 near Crossfield, Alta., just south of the Highway 72 overpass, at around 9 p.m.
RCMP said traffic in the area had been reduced to one lane in the construction zone as crews worked to remove steel girders, loading them into a flat-deck trailer with an excavator.
Investigators believe a steel girder had swung into the path of traffic while being lifted onto the flat-deck trailer, causing it to be hit by a northbound semi-trailer.
“The resulting impact struck a construction worker,” RCMP said in a Wednesday news release. “He was pronounced dead on scene.”

The driver of the semi-truck was not injured and remained on scene.
