Babysitter charged after Montreal police rescue child from Hochelaga-Maisonneuve fire

Josée Milot, 49, has been charged with abandonment, arson due to negligence and failing to provide necessities of life to a child.

The charges come after police officers saved a one-year-old baby by crawling through a fire in an apartment in Montreal’s east end Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough.

“They found the baby, who was in distress, and they were able to extract the child,” said Montreal police spokesperson Manuel Couture Thursday.

Police then evacuated all other residents from the building, knocking down some doors.

Eight police officers and the baby were treated onsite for smoke inhalation before being transported to hospital.
