The new extension stretches from Sangster Boulevard to Rochdale Boulevard.

Ward 10 councillor Jerry Flegel said the road will alleviate lots of traffic in the area. As well, it will open up new connectors for neighbouring residents.

“This is just going to be another easy way to get people in and out of the city. Relieve some of the stress. A lot of the Argyle people, Hawkstone people have been waiting for this,” he said.

Before the new Argyle St. north extension, there was only one way in and out of the Hawkstone Neighbourhood.

Argyle Park neighbourhood only had two entry points. The lack of access to main streets were a safety concern for residents.

“This becomes the third entrance or exit to Argyle Park which was a big concern for the residents. I think about four years ago, we had a concern where there was an accident that blocked the one [access point], what if someone else had an accident at the second location, well now you have a third,” Flegel said.
“We’ll look at ways to make sure we got lines set up and deter traffic speeding through the school zone. There are lights going up [and] flashing warning lights.”

Better traffic flow will also mean better business. Capital Auto Group CEO Bruce Axelson recognized the congestion in the area. The new extension will make it much more comfortable travelling in the north end, Axelson said.

“When people do business with you no matter what business you’re in, there has to be ease of access,” he said.

Better still, the new road opens up room for development. Seniors housing and a gas bar are in the works.

Expected to be open in 2019, the Brightwater senior’s home, made up of 135 beds, will begin construction next month.

“The whole area’s changed with the opening of Argyle North… It’s been great. We’ve been struggling to find a site. We’ve been looking in the north for quite a while,” Brightwater Senior Living founder Kevin Tell, said.

Traffic lights still need to be installed and then attention will turn to another extension. The new road will connect Rochdale to Bear Boulevard.
