Officials are investigating the cause of an early morning house fire in Hamilton that left a mother and two children dead.
Emergency crews were called to a home on Laird Drive, near Upper Ottawa Street and Limeridge Road East, just after 12:20 a.m. on Thursday.
A Hamilton Fire department spokesperson said three people were pulled from the house and subsequently pronounced dead.
“When crews arrived on scene they found heavy smoke conditions,” public information officer Claudio Mostacci told reporters at the scene. “In the course of the search and rescue, we did come across three individuals which were brought outside.”
Mostacci said one person succumbed to their injuries at the scene and two others were transported to hospital where they died.

Fire officials said the blaze was contained within the one-storey house and there were no damages to the adjacent homes.
“The fire was contained to the interior,” Mostacci said. “It did not break through the structure anywhere.”
The Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating the fire.
“They’ll be able to better assist us in determining the exact cause of the fire and we’ll be assessing the presence of smoke alarms, whether they were working or not,” Mostacci said.
