‘Not even Jesus pleased everyone’

I’m going to lay this out on the table right now… I’m not a sculptor.

Give me some clay and I’ll be lucky to make a letter out of it, let alone a bust of some famous person.

If you ever had the chance to visit the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in Hamilton, or the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, you’ve seen the busts of Hall of Famers from Russ Jackson to Vince Lombardi.

Some of the older busts, especially in the Canadian museum, weren’t quite an exact duplicate of the person it honours.

Some aren’t even close.

Which brings me to the bust of Portuguese soccer god Cristiano Ronaldo, which was unveiled Wednesday at Madeira airport.

The bust looks like a cartoon caveman version of Ronaldo and has gone viral, flooding social media streams with hilarious memes.

Sculptor Emanuel Santos, meantime, has defended his art work, saying, “It’s impossible to please the Greeks and the Trojans. Not even Jesus pleased everyone.”

He added, “This is a matter of taste, it’s not as simple as it seems.”

I’d agree with that… but we’re still allowed to make fun of it.
