Global News has been nominated for two Atlantic Journalism Awards (AJA).

Reporter and videographer duo Shelley Steeves and Steve Fiander, based in Moncton, received a nomination in the Feature TV category for their senior dog walker story.

The nod was for their Nov. 22 story of an 82-year-old Moncton, N.B. man who dedicated one day a week, in between cancer treatments, to visit and walk homeless dogs at the SPCA.

In the course of walking the dogs, the man also developed a relationship with a 15-year-old dog named Poppy who was having a difficult time finding someone to adopt him, and how the 82-year-old was unable to adopt him due to his ongoing treatments.

As a result of the story, a Sussex, N.B. resident adopted Poppy a week later.

Videojournalist Jeremy Keefe, based in Fredericton, has also taken home an AJA nomination in the Video Journalist: Television category. This category recognizes a journalist who takes on the roles of reporter, camera operator and editor.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Keefe’s story submitted for the award was that of the Gagetown Reservists where he was given access to the 5th Canadian Division Primary Reserve training exercises as CFB Gagetown. The training brought in reservists from around the region to train in “real world” situations.

Through a usage of interesting visuals and footage, Keefe provided a variety of perspectives of those participating in the training as well as using on-site access to provide shots of live fire engagement and Blackhawk helicopter drills.
