Two people have been rushed to hospital after a shooting at a chiropractic clinic in Burlington, Ont.

Halton Regional Police responded to a report of a double shooting at the Mejilla Chiropractic Clinic, located at 195 Plains Rd. E, just after noon Thursday.

“Both victims have since been transported to hospital. They are undergoing treatment. The status of their condition at this time is still unknown,” Sgt. Barry Malciw said at the scene.

“What I can tell is that we are not looking for a suspect — there is no ongoing threat to public safety.”

Malciw did not provide information on the identities of the victims or the extent of their injuries and said police had not yet notified next of kin.

He added that the two people were shot inside the building but could not confirm if they worked at the clinic.

Mike Barbour said he was in the area picking up his drycleaning when he heard several gunshots.

“Three people came out of the [clinic]. One lady was distressed, she was on the ground crying. Two people were consoling her,” he said.

“Two tactical police went inside. They immediately started coming in and out, but kind of on the relaxed side, so you could tell that everything was contained in there.”

Barbour said he saw two “immobilized” people taken out of the clinic on stretchers.

Mike Mareck said he was picking up a prescription at a nearby pharmacy when he noticed the commotion.

“A woman came out crying … and you could tell it wasn’t because of something small,” he said. “She was visibly shaken right up.”

Police said they will be providing more information as soon as it becomes available.
