Inn From The Cold family shelter has been at overcapacity for most of 2016

One of Calgary’s family based shelters held an open house Saturday, showing the public how it operates during the winter, a tough time for many.

Inn From The Cold, which is a last resort for homeless children and families, offers shelter, food, and access to social services.

It has kept its doors open for nearly 20 years, but this year has been especially hard because of the economy.

Financial news and insights delivered to your email every Saturday.

“For Inn From The Cold we’re seeing a 20 per cent drop (in donations) this year over last year and we all have been at or overcapacity for 93 per cent of this year, so every dollar counts, including gift and kind items. Out in the parking lot we’re having families drop off diapers, formula, wipes, just basic necessities and instrumental needs that are going to help us get through a challenging Christmas and into 2017,” Janeen Webb, director of donor relations at Inn From The Cold, said.

Anyone looking to to donate can go to the Inn From The Cold website and find a list of most-needed items.

However, Inn From The Cold says it needs cash donations more than ever right now, so it can purchase things based on the changing families coming in.
