Saskatchewan Party MLA Roger Parent passes away

Roger Parent, the Saskatchewan Party MLA for Saskatoon Meewasin who was recently diagnosed with cancer, has passed away. He was 63.

Parent passed away Tuesday night at Saskatoon’s Royal University Hospital with family members at his side.

Premier Brad Wall expressed his shock and sorrow.

“Roger was here in the assembly carrying out his duties throughout most of the fall session and only learned he had cancer in the past couple of weeks,” Wall said in a statement.

“This is a sad day and sudden loss for all of us who knew Roger.”

Parent had sought medical treatment after not feeling well. Tests revealed the cancer was widespread.

He was first elected in 2011 and was re-elected in 2016 with just over 50 per cent of the vote.

Parent served in a number of positions as a MLA, including the standing committee for human resources, the standing committee for private bills and the special committee on traffic safety.

Prior to entering politics, Parent worked as a business consultant and in project management. He was also involved in a number of community initiatives.

Flags at the legislature have been lowered to half-staff.
