David Valentin, executive vice-president at Mainstreet Research, said support is relatively soft among supporters for Moore and Clark.

“Right now the ‘anti-Atchison’ vote is fractured, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t time for one candidate to consolidate support,” Valentin said.

He said support is relatively soft among Moore and Clark supporters and the final week will be critical for the campaigns.

“It will come down to whether one of the two of them can really make an impression at the final debate and the closing days of the campaign,” Valentin said.

“Not only do they have a few more days to drive supporters to the advance polls, this is the last opportunity for the campaigns to deploy persuasion before shifting purely into turnout operations on election day.”

Valentin added that Atchison has recaptured his initial base of support and may be able to succeed in being re-elected mayor.

Voters head to the polls on Oct. 26.
