A freezing rain warning was extended into Sunday from central Alberta to include the city of Calgary and much of central Saskatchewan.
Environment Canada said a series of low pressure systems would bring moisture into the southern regions of Alberta late Saturday night.
These systems were expected to track north and east, so the Edmonton region was forecast to experience freezing rain conditions overnight, which would eventually move into Saskatchewan.
By Sunday morning, as forecast, the system had moved east and the warning was dropped in Edmonton.
As of 9 a.m. Sunday, the Alberta regions still under the freezing rain warning were:
- Bonnyville, St. Paul, Cold Lake, Lac La Biche
- Fort Saskatchewan, Vegreville, Redwater, Smoky Lake
- Leduc, Camrose, Wetaskiwin, Tofield
- Lloydminster, Wainwright, Vermillion, Provost
- Westlock, Barrhead, Athabasca
As of 9 a.m. Sunday, the Saskatchewan areas under the freezing rain warning were:
- City of Lloydminster, Sask.
- Île à la Crosse, Buffalo Narrows, Beauval
- La Ronge, Prince Albert National Park, Narrow Hills Provincial Park
- Martensville, Warman, Rosthern, Delisle, Wakaw
- Meadow Lake, Big River, Green Lake, Pierceland
- Prince Albert, Shellbrook, Spiritwood, Duck Lake
- Battlefords, Unity, Maidstone, St. Walburg

“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery,” the warning explains.
Freezing rain warnings are issued when “rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces.”
The warning for the central region of Alberta was in place for much of the day Saturday, and came off of the tail end of snow that hit the Edmonton region Friday. Many areas reported between 10 to 15 centimetres of snow by Saturday morning.

Wind warnings were also issued late Friday night for the southwest corner of Alberta.
Areas like Waterton recorded peak wind gusts in excess of 115 km/h Saturday.
West winds should take over Sunday bringing temperatures up to seasonal for the southwestern portion of the province, including Calgary.
