A paddle boarder has died from accidental drowning, RCMP confirmed on Monday.
Emergency crews were called to Skaha Beach at Sudbury Park in Penticton Sunday afternoon, after a he went under the water and failed to resurface.
Witnesses said when fire crews arrived, a dive team was put in the water, and within minutes the man was located and put into the rescue boat.
CPR was performed at the scene. He was taken by ambulance to Penticton Regional Hospital, but his condition was not known at this time.
Darcey Godfrey, an owner of Glow SUP Adventures on Skaha beach, witnessed the accident.
She saidthe man did not rent the board from her shop, but she became concerned when she saw that he had been separated from his paddle board.
Godfrey said paddle boarders need to have life jackets with them and she also advises paddle boarders to use a leash.
She said leashes are optional according to Transport Canada, but they keep people from becoming separated from their boards and that could be life saving.
The BC Coroners Service is now investigating.
