A teacher from Staffordshire, England explained the dangers of bullying to kids using two apples.

Rosie Dutton, 31, with Relax Kids Tamworth used one apple that was in perfect condition and another that was severely bruised inside to show the effects of bullying.

The thing about the apples though is that they looked the same from the outside.

Dutton had gently taped around one of the apples and repeatedly dropped it on the floor.

“I really wanted to emphasize the power of our words, to each other and ourselves, and what effect they can have on us,” Dutton told Global News.

Dutton posted about the experience on Facebook and it’s going viral. Her experiment has resonated with people around the world commenting that they applaud her efforts.

During the lesson, the children described how both apples looked the same: both were red and similar in size.

Dutton then took the apple she dropped on the floor and told the children that she didn’t like it. She said it was disgusting, ugly and had a stem that was too short.

She then instructed the children to pass the apple around and call it names.

One child said, “You’re a smelly apple,” another said, “I don’t even know why you exist.”

Then the children started to pass the other apple around and shared some kind words. “You’re a lovely apple,” and “What a beautiful colour you are,” some of the children said.

After all the children were done with their comments, Dutton said she showed them again that both apples looked the same.

But then she cut them open. One was fresh and juicy inside. The other was bruised and mushy inside.

“I think there was a light bulb moment for the children immediately.”

“They really got it, what we saw inside that apple, the bruises, the mush and the broken bits is what is happening inside every one of us when someone mistreats us with their words or actions,” Dutton posted to Facebook.

Dutton explained to the children that if she hadn’t cut the apple open, they would have never known how much pain they had caused it.

“When people are bullied, especially children, they feel horrible inside and sometimes don’t show or tell others how they are feeling.”

Dutton hopes to teach children that they have the ability to stop bullying from happening.

“We can teach our children to stand up for each other and to stop any form of bullying, just as one little girl did today when she refused to say unkind words to the apple.”

Dutton’s Facebook post has been shared almost 200,000 times.
