Brandon Wheat Kings players pick up a pair of WHL awards

The Brandon Wheat Kings are still four wins away from a league championship but some players are already celebrating.

Ivan Provorov was named the WHL’s Defenceman of the Year during the league’s annual awards ceremony in Calgary on Wednesday. Provorov is just the second Wheat King to be named the WHL’s best blueliner.

Provorov finished the season first in scoring among all WHL defenceman with 73 points in 62 games. The 19-year-old Russian also had a league best plus-64 rating. Provorov is a two-time World Junior Hockey Championship silver medalist. He was selected seventh overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2015 NHL Draft.

Tanner Kaspick is also bringing an award back to Brandon. The 18-year-old forward received the WHL’s Scholastic Player of the Year honour after completing his first semester of grade 12 with a 96% average. Kaspick has since increased his average to 98% in the second semester.

The Wheat Kings open their best-of-seven WHL championship series at home Friday night against the Seattle Thunderbirds.
