Thieves made off with three antique Bibles from Christ Church National Historic site in Hope on Thursday morning, which were part of the original artifacts of the church.

The books were from “the original church collection which Rev. Pringle was given prior to leaving for B.C. in 1858,” said Darla Dickinson, the heritage curator at the church, via email. “They were used when the church was [established] in 1861, and they were also used in 2011 when we celebrated our 150th. The books were a gift from the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge – a rather important society to the early history of BC!”

According to The Province, thieves also made off with the church’s sound system, money from the gift shop, and some silver goblets.

The Bibles are the most important items however, and are of varying sizes and bound in brown leather.

The church, a National Historic Site, was built in 1861, and still holds services, “making it the longest serving parish on the British Columbia mainland.”
